In 1992, the world’s nations decided to do something about global warming. The result was the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, in order to achieve
stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system
Unfortunately, the parties only decided on what to do and not how to do it. As is well known, the devil – or in this case the future of the planet – is in the details. In 1992, the world’s emissions of CO2 were about 23 Gt per year. In 2013, we seem close to setting a new record with 36 Gt per year! The current political response to the threat of global warming clearly is not working.
The idea behind GISEco is not at all radical. We just want the world’s governments to live up to the commitments they made 20 years ago. This will only happen if people demand action. By proposing a simple solution with a global sustainability fee (or global carbon tax), we want to force politicians to act. At least, they should not be able to claim that they do not know what to do anymore.
GISEco was started in 2013 with the creation of a website, a blog, and a Facebook page. Please help us spread the world in 2014.
We wish you happy holidays and a all the best for the new year!
